Brendan Makira

Biography

Brendan Makira is a backstroke specialist who represented Cook Islands at the 2026 14th Oceania Swimming Championships in Fiji. Competing in the backstroke and breaststroke events, he recorded a series of personal bests across the competition and reached the final of the 200m backstroke, finishing eighth with a time of 2:21.46.

At the championships he clocked personal bests of 1:05.22 in the 100m backstroke and 30.37 in the 50m backstroke. He also competed in the 50m breaststroke and the 200m individual medley. His backstroke results placed him in the top half of the international field in events that attracted competitors from across the Oceania region.

Makira's presence on the Cook Islands team alongside Carter Makira adds further depth to an increasingly strong national backstroke programme. His 2026 Oceania Championships performances represent his first results on the international stage and provide a base from which to develop over future seasons.
